BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN

Brooklyn, NY:  EDD was hired by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) as the ecological and water resources consultant for the planning and construction of renovations to Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s stream corridor and water garden.

EDD provided water quantity and quality modeling services for components critical to potable water savings and CSO abatement technologies. The team design incorporated rainwater capture and recirculation for the operation of the stream and bio-filtration units to ensure the maintenance of water quality within the garden’s two water bodies. The garden is estimated to reduce water consumption by approximately 21 million gallons per year and prevents 19 million gallons of water per year from entering the City’s combined sewer system; 5.5 million of which would have occurred during wet weather, contributing to CSOs.

EDD also aided in the design of the restored stream corridor, ensuring the minimization erosion risk and losses to groundwater infiltration.
