Hoboken, NJ: EDD is leading the habitat restoration efforts for the design of Maritime Park along the Hudson River’s western shoreline. The plan to revitalize the 4.2-acre post-industrial site includes community-focused components such as a new skate park, plaza and river walk, and lawn gathering space.
EDD is currently designing the living shoreline included in the first phase of this project, which is comprised of a saltmarsh and tidal pool complex, as well as resilient shoreline stabilization with a planted riprap edge.
EDD is informing the planting palette of the entire proposed park, which is currently organized into various distinct, bio- diverse habitats including maritime forest, coastal scrub, sandy dunes, and intertidal zones. EDD’s proposed planting schedules prioritize multiple strata of hardy, native species which can survive in typically nutrient-poor, post-industrial soils, as well as high saline and windy shoreline environments.
EDD is also developing a plan for an onsite nursery, which will not only grow plant material to be used for project construction but will also serve as a vital community stewardship and educational asset.
All the proposed restoration plantings were carefully selected for their tolerance to temperature, soil moisture, and soil nutrient ranges and anticipate sea level rise and climate change factors.
In future phases of the project, EDD will design a larger salt marsh adjacent to a reclaimed industrial pier, which will provide foraging habitat for harbor herons and fisheries.
