South Bronx, New York City, New York: eDesign Dynamics (EDD) served on a comprehensive design team with urban planners and architects as the technical advisor for the preparation of the EPA Community Change Grant application for South Bronx Unite (SBU) community group. The team developed a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plan seeking to reclaim a heavily industrialized area of the South Bronx waterfront, bringing environmental improvements and waterfront access to more than 100,000 residents. The plan addresses long-standing environmental injustices by mitigating air pollution, flood risk, and climate change impacts in a neighborhood with a history of disinvestment.
EDD’s role focused on technical advising in hydrology, watershed management, green infrastructure, and ecological enhancement. EDD produced detailed ecological and technical reports, conducted overland flooding and drainage analyses, and developed stormwater management strategies to inform planning-level design. EDD also led community engagement events alongside grassroots organizations. EDD’s technical recommendations were combined with community priorities, resulting in proposal recommendations that balance ecological performance with neighborhood needs.
The grant proposal identifies two catalyst projects, the Lincoln Ave Catalyst Project and the 132nd St Catalyst Project, as well as supplementary neighborhood interventions. Proposed elements include new public open spaces, resilient shoreline stabilization, habitat restoration through tidal pools and oyster reefs, integration of green infrastructure, and opportunities for ecological education and stewardship.
EDD also led the cost estimation for the entire proposal and prepared major supporting reports to advance implementation of the master plan. Together, these efforts establish a framework for long-term monitoring and evaluation of climate action strategies while creating a resilient, community-centered waterfront.
