Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy hired eDesign Dynamics to develop a long-term re-visioning for Lake Elizabeth and the West Commons.
The re-visioning would include consideration of potential stormwater management benefits that the lake might provide. Therefore, the conceptual plan involves re-integration of Lake Elizabeth within the larger watershed. The re-integration will be done in a manner that reduces the demand for potable make-up water.
Furthermore, the plan also demonstrates a range of techniques to manage stormwater within Pittsburgh’s parks. It creates attractive new green amenities consistent with stakeholder priorities. In addition, the plan also respectfully preserves the valuable cultural landmarks present within the historic Commons.
eDesign Dynamics provided the PPC with a toolkit to develop a vernacular for managing stormwater within parks properties. Due to that effort, they also developed construction drawings for a cost-efficient modification to existing storm drains that promotes in filtration over direct discharge. The lake system uses recirculation through planting beds and filter bays to maintain water quality.
