New York, NY: EDD serves as the lead consultant on a New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) task order contract for providing Green Infrastructure (GI) design services at sites owned by the New York City Department of Education.
The goal of the project is to design an extensive system of GI practices to capture and manage stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces throughout New York City public schools. Under the contract’s first task order, DEP assigned EDD to perform project planning and site analysis services at 34 schools. Leading a team of engineers, landscape architects, environmental scientists, drillers, and boring inspectors, EDD completed existing conditions assessments, Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments, geotechnical investigations, and conceptual designs for the first task order sites on time and under budget. Additional task orders were issued for providing design drawings, construction documents, procurement support and design services during construction for 10 of the original 34 schools. Working with DEP and project partner Trust for Public Land, EDD prioritized GI designs that provided an added benefit to students and the communities that utilized the schoolyards during non-school hours. This resulted in the design of 10 artificial turf fields, two (2) sub-surface practices, and one (1) combined rain garden/permeable pavers practice with tree plantings that will provide a small oasis to a schoolyard with no current trees. Once constructed, the 10 sites will manage over 477,000 gallons of stormwater runoff from 6.8 acres of impervious area.
