Dr. Paul Kerlinger
Wind Turbine Habitat Mitigation Expert
Dr. Paul Kerlinger has been an avian consultant to the wind energy and communication tower industries since 1994. He specializes in bird impacts at those structures, as well as providing expert testimony in state and federal litigation, as well as local venues. Kerlinger has conducted preconstruction risk assessments and post-construction impact studies at wind turbine and communication tower projects in more than 25 states across the U.S., as well as Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Spain.
His publications include five books, nearly 50 peer reviewed scientific papers, more than 100 wind and communication tower industry reports, and more than 100 popular articles in magazines.
Kerlinger’s cutting edge research of bird impacts at wind turbines and communication towers has led to cost effective and successful mitigation at these structures. Most important is his work to make FAA and other lighting of turbines and towers safer for birds and change in federal policy on lighting of these structures. His recommendations have been adopted by federal and state wildlife agencies resulting in significant reduction of bird mortality at those structures.
